PDRN: Is “Salmon DNA” Skincare Actually Worth the Hype?

Skincare has officially entered its salmon era.

Unless you've managed to avoid TikTok, Instagram and pretty much every beauty launch recently, you'll probably have seen PDRN popping up everywhere.

Serums. Creams. Korean skincare. Microneedling treatments. Injectables.

And, of course, the phrase guaranteed to get everyone's attention:

Salmon DNA.

PDRN has gone from something most people had never heard of to one of skincare's biggest buzzwords — and now brands including Medik8 are bringing the technology firmly into professional and topical skincare too.

And actually?

I'm here for it.

I think PDRN is genuinely interesting.

But — and you knew there was going to be a but — we need to understand what we're actually talking about.

Because the PDRN serum you've seen on TikTok, a professional PDRN product used alongside microneedling and an injectable polynucleotide treatment are not interchangeable treatments.

Different formulations.

Different delivery.

Different jobs.

So before we all start slathering ourselves in “salmon DNA”, let's get into it.

First things first: what actually is PDRN?

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide.

Traditionally, PDRN is made from highly purified DNA fragments derived from salmonid fish. It's related to the wider polynucleotide category that has become increasingly popular within regenerative aesthetics.

The science is interesting because PDRN and polynucleotides have been investigated for their role in tissue repair and regeneration.

In aesthetics, injectable polynucleotides have been studied for things including skin texture, wrinkles, hydration and elasticity.

There is promising research — but we're still building the evidence base.

A systematic review of aesthetic polynucleotide treatments found encouraging results but also highlighted that the existing studies were limited in quality and that better research is still needed. More recent reviews continue to describe PN/PDRN as promising while emphasising the need for stronger evidence. (PubMed)

Which is basically my favourite skincare sentence:

Promising? Yes. Magic? No.

But does PDRN always mean salmon DNA?

Here's where it gets particularly interesting.

No.

Although traditional PDRN is commonly associated with salmon-derived DNA, newer biotechnology is allowing brands to create alternatives.

Medik8's new Prismatic PDRN, for example, is biotechnology-derived rather than salmon-derived.

Medik8 says its technology has been engineered specifically for topical skincare, with a three-dimensional structure designed to address one of the major challenges with traditional topical PDRN: getting a relatively large molecule through the skin barrier.

And this is exactly why I think we need to stop treating the words PDRN, salmon DNA and polynucleotides as though they automatically mean the same treatment.

They don't.

The big question: can you just put PDRN on your face?

This is where I'm probably going to ruin a few TikTok videos.

Your skin is a barrier.

A very good one.

Its entire job is essentially to stop things casually wandering inside.

So putting an ingredient on the surface of the skin is very different from introducing a product professionally into or through the skin.

That's why I'm much more interested in formulation and delivery than I am in seeing “PDRN” written in enormous letters on the front of a bottle.

A topical PDRN product can absolutely be an interesting addition to skincare.

But it shouldn't automatically be presented as giving you the same result as injectable polynucleotides.

It isn't the same route of administration.

And we shouldn't pretend it is.

Then Medik8 entered the chat...

And this is where things get particularly exciting for me professionally.

And this?

I am here for.

Because microneedling already creates controlled microchannels in the skin and initiates a natural wound-healing response.

The prospect of combining that treatment with a professionally formulated product designed specifically for use in that setting is much more interesting to me than simply jumping on the latest viral ingredient.

But there's an important distinction again:

Microneedling with a professional PDRN product still isn't the same thing as injectable polynucleotides.

And I really want clients to understand that.

Topical PDRN vs Microneedled PDRN vs Injectable Polynucleotides

Think of them as three different categories.

Topical PDRN skincare sits on the skincare side. You're applying a cosmetic formulation to the skin as part of your routine. The formulation, molecular characteristics and delivery system matter enormously.

Professional PDRN alongside microneedling sits somewhere different. You're combining a professional formulation with a treatment that creates controlled microchannels and stimulates the skin's own repair response.

And then there are injectable polynucleotides, which are medical aesthetic treatments placed directly into the tissue by an appropriately trained practitioner.

The evidence, formulation, depth, concentration and method of delivery aren't automatically transferable from one category to another.

That's the bit social media sometimes conveniently leaves out.

What about all the Korean PDRN skincare?

Korean skincare deserves a lot of the credit for putting PDRN firmly on consumers' radar.

You'll now find PDRN products from brands such as Medicube, VT Cosmetics, Anua and other K-beauty names, alongside professional injectable brands such as Rejuran.

But again, brand names and percentages don't tell the whole story.

I want to know:

What's the source of the PDRN?

What's actually in the formulation?

How has it been formulated for delivery?

What else is in the product?

What evidence exists for that particular formulation?

And most importantly...

What does your skin actually need?

Because I don't care how viral an ingredient is — if your skin barrier is compromised, you're using seven different actives and your face is currently begging you to leave it alone, I'm probably not going to tell you to buy another serum just because TikTok says so.

And what about injectable polynucleotides?

This is another area where terminology gets messy.

Injectable polynucleotide treatments have become incredibly popular because they're different from traditional filler.

We're not using them primarily to add volume or change the shape of your face.

They're used as a regenerative skin treatment, with the aim of supporting skin quality rather than creating structural augmentation in the way a dermal filler can.

Research so far is encouraging. Reviews have reported potential improvements in areas such as texture, elasticity and wrinkles, but they also make something very clear:

We still need larger, better-quality studies and greater standardisation.

That's important.

You can be excited about a treatment and still acknowledge where the science currently stands.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

So... am I sold on PDRN?

I'm definitely interested.

And actually, I'm here for it.

What I like about this whole movement is the shift we're seeing in aesthetics.

For years, the conversation was largely:

Fill this.

Freeze that.

Add volume here.

Now we're talking much more about skin quality, collagen, regeneration, barrier health and how we can encourage the skin to function better.

That's much more aligned with how I like to treat skin.

I'm particularly interested in where professional skincare is heading — including products like Medik8's new professional Exo-PDRN concentrate and how technologies like this can complement treatments such as microneedling.

But I'm also keeping my sensible practitioner hat firmly on.

New doesn't automatically mean better.

And viral definitely doesn't mean necessary.

Would I buy a PDRN serum just because it says PDRN?

No.

And this is probably the biggest thing I want you to take away from this blog.

Don't shop for ingredients. Shop for your skin.

It's the same conversation we've had with retinol.

And peptides.

And niacinamide.

And exosomes.

And every other ingredient that suddenly becomes the thing we're apparently all supposed to be using.

There is no single ingredient that every face desperately needs.

A beautifully formulated PDRN product might have a place in your routine.

A professional microneedling treatment incorporating PDRN technology might be a great option for your treatment plan.

Injectable polynucleotides might be more appropriate for what you're trying to achieve.

Or...

You might need none of them.

And that's okay too.

The Bottom Line

PDRN isn't something I'd dismiss as another silly skincare trend.

There is some genuinely interesting science here, and I'm excited to see where the technology goes.

But we need to separate science from marketing.

Topical PDRN skincare is not the same as professional PDRN used with microneedling.

And neither is automatically equivalent to injectable polynucleotide treatments.

Different formulations.
Different delivery.
Different jobs.

So yes...

Skincare has officially entered its PDRN era.

And I'm absolutely here for it.

Just don't buy the trend.

Buy what your skin actually needs.
