How to Start Using Retinol (Without Wrecking Your Skin Barrier)
You've decided you're ready to introduce vitamin A into your skincare routine.
Fantastic.
Whether your goal is healthier ageing, smoother skin, fewer breakouts or fading pigmentation, retinoids are one of the most effective ingredients available.
But here's the thing...
The biggest mistake we see isn't choosing the wrong retinoid.
It's using the right product too quickly.
When it comes to vitamin A, slow and steady really does win the race.
Step One: Choose the Right Vitamin A
Not all retinoids are created equal.
The best product depends on your skin type, experience and goals.
At The Hideout, we commonly recommend:
Medik8 Crystal Retinal®
Perfect if you're new to vitamin A or looking to gradually increase your strength.
Unlike traditional retinol, Crystal Retinal contains retinaldehyde (retinal), which only requires one conversion step before becoming retinoic acid. This means it works more efficiently than retinol whilst remaining well tolerated by many skin types.
Available in progressive strengths, it's an excellent option for building confidence with vitamin A.
Skinbetter Science AlphaRet®
One of our favourite products in clinic.
AlphaRet combines a retinoid with an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) in a patented formulation, helping to improve skin texture, fine lines and overall skin quality whilst remaining surprisingly gentle.
It's often the perfect choice for clients wanting visible results without the prolonged peeling and irritation that can sometimes accompany stronger retinoids.
Obagi Retinol & Tretinoin
For clients ready to progress further, Obagi offers both professional-strength retinol products and prescription-strength tretinoin (available following a consultation and prescription where appropriate).
Tretinoin is the active form of vitamin A and is considered the gold standard for treating photoageing and acne. Because of its potency, it should always be introduced carefully and under professional guidance.
Start Slowly
This is the most important piece of advice we can give.
More is not better.
Using vitamin A every night from day one won't give you faster results.
It will usually give you an irritated skin barrier.
Instead, we recommend introducing your retinoid gradually.
A simple starting schedule might look like:
Week 1–2
✔️ One evening per week
Week 3–4
✔️ Two evenings per week
Week 5 onwards
✔️ Increase slowly if your skin is comfortable.
Listen to your skin.
There's no prize for reaching nightly use as quickly as possible.
Use a Pea-Sized Amount
When it comes to retinoids, less really is more.
A pea-sized amount is enough for the entire face.
Applying more won't make it work faster—it simply increases the likelihood of irritation.
Avoid the corners of the nose, lips and around the eyes unless your clinician has advised otherwise.
Try the Sandwich Method
If your skin feels sensitive or you're nervous about starting vitamin A, the sandwich method can make a huge difference.
Simply apply:
Moisturiser
Your retinoid
Another layer of moisturiser
This helps buffer the skin whilst still allowing the vitamin A to do its job.
It's one of our favourite techniques for clients with sensitive or easily reactive skin.
Don't Mix Too Many Active Ingredients
Your skin can only tolerate so much at once.
On your retinoid evenings, keep the rest of your routine simple.
A gentle cleanser, moisturiser and your vitamin A are often all you need.
Avoid layering strong exfoliating acids or harsh scrubs on the same night unless advised by your skin professional.
SPF Isn't Optional
Retinoids encourage healthy skin renewal, making freshly revealed skin more vulnerable to UV damage.
Daily broad-spectrum SPF is essential.
Without consistent sun protection, you're not only increasing the risk of irritation—you could also undo many of the benefits vitamin A is working so hard to achieve.
Think of SPF as vitamin A's best friend.
What Should You Expect?
It's completely normal to experience a short adjustment period.
Some people notice:
Mild dryness
Tightness
Flaking
Temporary sensitivity
This doesn't necessarily mean the product isn't right for you.
However, persistent burning, severe redness or painful irritation isn't something you should push through.
If you're unsure, pause your retinoid and speak to your skin professional before restarting.
Consistency Beats Strength
One of the biggest misconceptions is that stronger products always produce better results.
In reality, a retinoid you can comfortably use week after week will almost always outperform a stronger product that leaves your skin too irritated to continue.
Healthy skin thrives on consistency.
The Hideout's Approach
At The Hideout, we never recommend vitamin A based solely on what's strongest.
Instead, we look at your skin as a whole.
We'll consider:
Your skin concerns
Your barrier health
Previous retinoid experience
Lifestyle
Sensitivity
Long-term goals
From there, we'll recommend the right product and create a plan that allows your skin to adapt gradually and comfortably.
Because great skin isn't built by rushing the process.
It's built through patience, consistency and expert guidance.
