My Non-Negotiable Rules for Surgical Recovery (And Why they Should Be Yours Too)
There are very few things I'm completely uncompromising about in post-operative care.
This is one of them.
Long before I opened The Hideout, I worked as a Patient Care Coordinator in cosmetic surgery. Every day I saw incredible transformations, but I also witnessed the reality of recovery. One thing was consistent across every patient we cared for:
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) wasn't considered an optional luxury. It was part of the recovery plan.
Years later, after treating hundreds of post-operative clients, my belief has only become stronger.
Surgery may take a few hours.
Recovery takes weeks.
How you support your body during that time can make a significant difference to your comfort, confidence and healing.
Recovery Is About More Than Swelling
After surgery, your body immediately begins repairing itself.
Inflammation increases, fluid collects around the surgical area and your lymphatic system works hard to remove waste products and excess fluid.
Swelling, bruising and tightness are completely normal.
However, when fluid remains stagnant for too long it can contribute to discomfort, prolonged swelling and, in some cases, fibrosis (areas of hardened scar tissue).
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle treatment designed to encourage healthy lymphatic flow, helping your body move fluid more efficiently while supporting the natural healing process.
At The Hideout, every treatment is adapted to your stage of healing, your surgeon's protocol and how your body presents on the day.
No two recoveries are ever identical.
What Recovery Looks Like at The Hideout
One thing clients often tell me is how reassuring it feels simply to have someone experienced by their side.
Recovery isn't only physical.
It's emotional too.
Questions come up every day.
"Is this swelling normal?"
"Why does one side feel different?"
"Should I still be this sore?"
Having someone knowledgeable to guide you through those questions can make all the difference.
Every appointment is completely one-to-one in a calm, private environment where there is time to assess your progress, adapt your treatment and support you throughout your recovery.
My Top Tips for a Better Recovery
Whilst MLD plays an important role, what you do between appointments matters just as much.
Here are the tips I share with almost every post-operative client.
1. Prioritise Protein
This is probably the advice people underestimate the most.
Your body needs protein to repair tissue, produce collagen and rebuild after surgery.
Aim to include a good source of protein with every meal.
Examples include:
Chicken
Turkey
Fish
Eggs
Greek yoghurt
Cottage cheese
Tofu
Lentils and beans
Protein shakes if you're struggling to eat enough
Many surgeons recommend aiming for a higher protein intake during the first few weeks after surgery to support healing.
2. Increase Your Vitamin C
Vitamin C plays an important role in collagen production and wound healing.
Whilst supplements can be helpful for some people, I always encourage clients to focus on food first where possible.
Great sources include:
Oranges
Kiwi fruit
Strawberries
Blueberries
Peppers
Broccoli
Tomatoes
Adding plenty of colourful fruit and vegetables to your meals can support your body's natural healing process.
I also highly recommend Altrient Liposomal Vitamin C. This increases skin elasticity by up to 40% so this this perfect in prep for any surgery,
3. Stay Hydrated
Your lymphatic system relies on adequate hydration to function efficiently.
Aim to drink water regularly throughout the day rather than trying to catch up later.
Good hydration may help reduce fluid retention and supports your body's natural recovery.
4. Wear Your Compression Correctly
Your compression garment is there for a reason.
It should feel supportive without creating excessive pressure, folds or uncomfortable digging.
A poorly fitting garment can affect both comfort and healing.
If you're unsure whether yours fits correctly, always ask.
I regularly recommend Macom garments because of their quality and excellent customer service. If you're unsure about sizing, their team are incredibly helpful.
They've also kindly provided my clients with a 15% discount using code HIDEOUT15.
5. Keep Moving... Gently
Complete bed rest isn't usually the answer.
Short, gentle walks help encourage circulation and reduce stiffness, but equally this isn't the time for intense exercise or trying to "push through."
Listen to your surgeon's advice and allow your body the time it needs.
6. Sleep Is Healing
Your body carries out much of its repair work while you sleep.
Try to prioritise good quality rest, particularly during the first couple of weeks after surgery.
If you've been advised to sleep in a particular position, do your best to follow those instructions.
7. Don't Compare Your Recovery
This is one of the biggest mistakes I see.
Social media shows highlight reels.
Your friend's recovery isn't your recovery.
Healing depends on the procedure, your health, your age, your lifestyle and countless other factors.
Focus on your own progress rather than someone else's timeline.
You're Never Alone
One of the things clients tell me they value most isn't just the treatment.
It's knowing they have someone to ask.
If something doesn't feel quite right, if you're unsure whether what you're experiencing is normal, or if you simply need reassurance, having experienced support can make recovery feel much less overwhelming.
At The Hideout, you're never treated like just another appointment.
My goal is simple.
To help you heal comfortably, confidently and with the support you deserve.
Because surgery is only one part of your journey.
Recovery is where your body does the real work.
And you don't have to navigate it alone.
